The subject of religion and its influence on mankind has always amazed me. The extent of both its positive and unfortunately negative influence of humanity continue, despite our scientific and sociological advancement. Perhaps it is our relative insignificance in a boundless universe and, from a time sense, our brief life spans that prompt us toward religion and belief systems. Largely prompted by the hope for an afterlife.

The man-made and recent religions/belief systems prompt us to endlessly compete and proliferate our religious views. It is often by selling answers to the question – ‘Why do we exist?’ Accumulated knowledge or consciousness about our existence is what firstly raises this question; or has consequently placed us into belief systems and existence dilemmas. Our acquired knowledge is so obscure in relation to the unknown. Our life spans are so short in relation to the universe’s life ~ which pushes us to believe in afterlife fallacies, while forgetting to best live the experience of life itself. I would say that we exist as part of nature with no reason whatsoever. Religion will have a positive role to play, if it is directed to explaining “how best to live” rather than “why do we exist”. The wiser societies will choose to live socially and ethically contributing to the cumulative knowledge and order of living systems.

I am inclined towards the teachings of Sree Narayana Guru, who was distinct as a prophetic philosopher seeing all of humanity (and life systems) in oneness, brushing aside race, religion and other superficial differences. His life was about teaching the “how to live aspects” rather than pondering the “why do we exist” questions. A philosophy that transcends all religions and looks towards the betterment of humankind and other living systems dependent on our ethical social conduct. When the outlook of mankind reaches that plateau of equality, the differences between religions will fade away. What then remains will be pure reason, (non-religious) ethics, progressive thought and focus on ‘living’ the experience of life.
